George Gey a very spectacular scientist who left an
understanding and
a foundation on which cancer research and cell culture can be grown. Gey was
working on his undergrad from the University of Pittsburgh. Gey was working at
Johns Hopkins hospital. Gey and his wife built aTissue Culture Laboratory with
his wife, Margaret, in an old janitor’s quarters at Johns Hopkins. Gey used
pieces from Jake Shapiro’s Junkyard. If the cells are given the necessary space and an endless supply of
food, some evolve into a cell line—a lineage of cells from one source that
divide indefinitely. Scientists call this immortality. (par 5 last line of
an obsession with culture) Gey and a colleague
decided they wanted to film the life of dividing cells. Gey made a hybrid
microscope/motion-picture camera from metal scraps, (specialized microscope
parts) and a 16-millimeter camera so he could capture the lives of the cells.
Gey also invented the roller drum. Gey got Henrietta Lacks cancer cells and put
the cells in the roller drum and the cells multiplied rapidly. Henrietta died
and left behind 5 children and her type of cancer was very painful. After 1
year of her death Lacks cells were being frozen and shipped around the world.
Gey was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Gey donated a strand of his cell line
from his own tumor. The HeLa cells are still used today and helped further the
medical field in many ways.
The picture below is showing autosomal chromosomes and sex chromosomes. This is how scientist would indicate if the fetus was a girl or a boy. In this case I am a girl so I would be looking at the xx chromosome. If you were a boy you would be looking at the xy chromosome.
